Fishing in Essaouira: out with the blue boats, back with your catch

Essaouira lives off the sea: the port's blue boats have landed sardines and sea bream for centuries. You can join a real working fisherman for a half-day with rod and bait, or charter a boat for deep-sea fishing beyond the Mogador islands. Ranges below include gear, bait, and the crew — and your exact price is locked before you step on board.

How it works, straight talk

The shared half-day (60–85€/person) leaves the port at dawn or early afternoon on a traditional wooden boat: bottom fishing over the reefs for bream, croaker and mackerel, with the crew helping beginners. Whatever you catch is yours — most guests have it grilled at a port restaurant for lunch.

The private charter (250–450€ per boat, up to 6–8 people) goes further out for deep-sea fishing: bonito, barracuda and, in season, small tuna, with trolling and spinning gear provided. Best seasons: spring and autumn; the sea decides the schedule, so we always confirm conditions the evening before.

Frequently asked questions

I've never fished. Is the half-day trip suitable?

Yes — most guests are beginners. The crew sets up your rod, shows you the technique and helps with every catch. Bottom fishing on the reefs is productive and forgiving.

Do I keep what I catch?

Yes, your catch is yours. We can arrange to have it grilled at a port restaurant on return (8–15€/person) — the best lunch in Essaouira, by definition.

What about seasickness and weather?

The skipper checks the swell forecast and we confirm the trip the evening before. If the sea is unsafe, we reschedule free or refund. If you're prone to seasickness, take a tablet an hour before departure — the bay is often calm but it's still the Atlantic.

What's the difference between the half-day and the charter?

The half-day is shared, near the reefs, relaxed and great value. The charter is your own boat: further offshore, bigger fish (bonito, barracuda, seasonal tuna), better gear, and the schedule is yours.

What time do trips leave?

Shared trips leave around 7:00 (dawn bite) or 13:00; charters are flexible. Exact time and meeting point at the port are in your voucher.
